PAT Testing for Florists: Fridges, Counter Equipment and Everyday Appliances

PAT Testing for Florists: Fridges, Counter Equipment and Everyday Appliances

Warm independent florist flower preparation area with everyday electrical equipment that may need PAT testing

Florists and flower shops may not seem like electrical-heavy businesses at first glance, but there are usually more appliances on site than people realise.

A florist may use flower fridges, counter equipment, card machines, printers, desk lamps, display lighting, staff room appliances, chargers and cleaning equipment as part of normal daily work.

For independent florists, flower shops and high street retail businesses, it is worth knowing what should be included when arranging PAT testing.

Relevant for: florists, flower shops, high street retail, small shops, customer-facing businesses, local workplaces, gift shops, boutiques and small business owners.

Florists often have more electrical items than expected

In a flower shop, electrical equipment can be spread across several areas: the counter, shop floor, flower preparation area, stock room, staff area and back office.

Some items are obvious, such as a till or card machine. Others can be easy to miss because they are tucked behind the counter, used occasionally, or treated as part of the background.

Our related guide, What Counts as an Appliance for PAT Testing?, explains why smaller everyday items should still be considered.

Flower fridges and chillers

Many florists use flower fridges or chillers to help keep stock fresh.

These may be larger appliances, but they are still part of the electrical equipment used by the business. They may run for long periods, sit in busy shop areas, and be important to the day-to-day operation of the shop.

If a florist has a flower fridge, display chiller or other refrigerated equipment, it should be considered when preparing the appliance list for a PAT testing visit.

Counter and payment equipment

The counter area is one of the most common places to find electrical equipment in a florist.

This may include:

  • tills and point-of-sale equipment
  • card machines and payment terminals
  • receipt printers
  • label printers
  • tablets or laptops used for orders
  • phone chargers and small power supplies
  • desk lamps or task lighting

These items are often used throughout the day and should not be left out simply because they are small or familiar.

Flower preparation areas

The preparation area is where a florist may cut stems, wrap flowers, prepare arrangements, print labels or organise orders.

Electrical items in this area may include task lamps, small printers, label printers, chargers, fans, portable heaters or other plug-in equipment used around the workbench.

Because preparation areas can be busy and practical working spaces, it is worth checking that cables, appliances and small electrical items are still in good condition.

Display lighting and shop floor equipment

Florists often use lighting to make displays look warm and welcoming.

This might include lamps, display lighting, small illuminated signs, seasonal lighting or other plug-in items used around the shop floor.

If these items are plugged in and used as part of the business, they should be considered as part of the shop’s electrical safety routine.

Staff room and back-room appliances

Staff room equipment can easily be missed in any small business, including florists.

A kettle, microwave, toaster, fridge, coffee machine, phone charger or small heater may be used every day, but not always included when counting appliances for PAT testing.

We covered this in more detail in PAT Testing for Staff Rooms: Kettles, Microwaves and Everyday Equipment.

Cleaning equipment should also be considered

Florists often need to keep floors, counters and preparation areas clean, especially where water, leaves, soil or packaging are part of the normal working environment.

Vacuum cleaners, small cleaning appliances or other plug-in equipment may be used regularly but stored out of sight.

If cleaning equipment is used in the flower shop, it should be included when preparing for a PAT testing visit.

Items florists can easily forget

The most commonly missed items are usually not the large appliances. They are the everyday items that blend into the shop.

In a florist or flower shop, easy-to-miss items may include:

  • label printers
  • phone chargers
  • desk lamps and task lights
  • portable heaters or fans
  • cleaning equipment
  • staff room appliances
  • items kept in cupboards, back rooms or preparation areas
  • appliances added since the last PAT testing visit

Our guide, The Electrical Items Businesses Forget to Include in PAT Testing, gives more examples of equipment that can easily be overlooked.

Keeping an appliance list helps

A simple appliance list can make PAT testing easier for florists and other small high street businesses.

It helps keep track of what equipment is on site, what has been added, what has been replaced, and what should be included in the next visit.

If you do not already have one, Why Small Businesses Should Keep an Appliance List explains why even a basic list can be useful.

New equipment should be added to the list

Florists may add new equipment over time, such as a new fridge, printer, till, lamp, fan, heater or staff room appliance.

New appliances should normally be supplied in a safe condition, but they should still be visually checked and added to your records.

Our guide Do New Appliances Need PAT Testing Straight Away? explains this in more detail.
