Do New Appliances Need PAT Testing Straight Away
Do New Appliances Need PAT Testing Straight Away?
If you have just bought a new fridge, kettle, microwave, computer, card machine or other electrical item for your business, you may wonder whether it needs PAT testing straight away.
In many cases, brand-new electrical equipment should already have been supplied in a safe condition. That does not mean it should be ignored, but it does mean a formal test may not always be needed immediately.
For small businesses, landlords and local workplaces, the sensible approach is to check new equipment visually, make sure it is suitable for use, keep a record of it, and add it to the normal PAT testing or appliance inspection schedule.
New does not mean “never checked”
A new appliance should still be looked over before it is put into use.
Packaging can be damaged in transit, plugs can be marked, cables can be trapped, and items may not always be suitable for the environment they are being used in. A simple visual check can often confirm that the item looks safe, complete and ready for use.
This is especially useful in busy workplaces where new equipment may arrive and be put straight into service without much thought.
What should be checked on a new appliance?
Before using a new electrical item, it is sensible to check:
- the plug is not cracked or damaged
- the cable is not cut, trapped or crushed
- the appliance casing is not damaged
- the item is suitable for the way it will be used
- the appliance has the correct manufacturer markings and instructions
- the equipment is being used in a sensible location
This type of check is not complicated, but it is an important part of managing electrical equipment safely.
Should it be recorded?
For many businesses, it is helpful to record new equipment as part of the appliance register.
This does not always mean carrying out a full electrical test on the day it arrives. It may simply mean noting that the item is new, has been visually checked, and should be included in the next routine inspection and testing visit.
This gives the business a clearer record of what equipment is on site and helps avoid items being missed later.
What about landlords and rental properties?
Landlords who provide electrical appliances should be able to show that those items are safe for tenants to use.
If a property has new appliances, they should still be checked visually before a tenant moves in. It is also sensible to keep records of supplied appliances, especially items such as kettles, microwaves, lamps, televisions, fridges, washing machines and other plug-in equipment.
For landlords and letting agents, clear records can be useful because they help demonstrate that supplied electrical equipment is being managed properly.
When might a new item need testing sooner?
A new appliance may need closer attention if:
- the packaging or appliance appears damaged
- the plug, cable or casing looks suspect
- the appliance is being used in a higher-risk environment
- there is uncertainty over where the item came from
- the item is second-hand, refurbished or previously used
- the equipment has been moved, stored or transported frequently
In those situations, it may be sensible to carry out a formal inspection and test before the item is put into regular use.
A practical approach for small businesses
The aim is not to make PAT testing more complicated than it needs to be. The aim is to manage electrical equipment sensibly.
For a small office, shop, café, salon, clinic or landlord property, a practical approach is usually best:
- visually check new equipment before use
- record what has been added
- remove anything that looks damaged or unsafe
- include new items in the next routine PAT testing visit
- keep a digital report for your records
