PAT Testing for Dog Groomers and Pet Care Businesses: Dryers, Clippers and Customer Areas
PAT Testing for Dog Groomers and Pet Care Businesses: Dryers, Clippers and Customer Areas

Dog groomers and pet care businesses often use electrical equipment throughout the day, sometimes in busy working areas where water, hair, movement and cleaning are all part of the normal routine.
Dryers, clippers, grooming tables, lamps, chargers, payment equipment, washing areas, reception desks and staff-room appliances can all become part of the setup.
Because the equipment is used around animals, damp areas and regular cleaning, it is worth keeping appliance checks and records clear.
If you are unsure what might need checked, you can ask Wendy, Thorn PAT Testing’s online assistant, for a guide before requesting a confirmed quote.
Relevant for: dog groomers, pet grooming salons, pet care businesses, small animal services, grooming rooms, reception areas, staff rooms and local high-street businesses.
Grooming equipment used every day
In a grooming salon, some electrical items are central to the work.
Dryers, clippers, trimmers, grooming table controls, task lamps and chargers may all be used regularly throughout the day. These items can be moved, handled often and stored between appointments, so they should not be forgotten when arranging PAT testing.
If an appliance plugs in and is used as part of the business, it should be considered for the appliance record where relevant. Our guide What Counts as an Appliance for PAT Testing? explains this in more detail.
Water, cleaning and busy work areas
Pet grooming businesses are not the same as a quiet office.
There may be wet floors, washing areas, drying areas, loose hair, cleaning products and equipment being moved around during the day. That does not mean the workplace is unsafe, but it does mean electrical items should be looked after properly and checked at suitable intervals.
Cables, plugs and casings should be kept in good condition. If something looks damaged, smells unusual, overheats, buzzes or behaves strangely, it should be taken out of normal use and checked before being used again. I have covered this wider point in Damaged Electrical Appliances at Work: When Should You Stop Using Them?.
Reception and payment equipment
The front of the business can also include electrical equipment that needs to be included in the record.
A card machine, till, phone charger, computer, printer, router, desk lamp or small speaker may all be used in the reception or customer waiting area.
These items can feel like ordinary shop equipment, but they are still part of the electrical setup of the premises.
Staff rooms and back areas
Small pet care businesses often have a back room, staff area or storage space where extra items are kept.
That might include a kettle, microwave, fridge, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, fan, portable heater, spare dryer, charger or cleaning equipment.
These are the items that can easily be missed if the focus is only on the main grooming area. Our guide PAT Testing for Staff Rooms: Kettles, Microwaves and Everyday Equipment explains why staff-area equipment should not be forgotten.
Keep appliance records simple
For a dog groomer or small pet care business, appliance safety does not need to become complicated.
A simple appliance list and an annual PAT testing routine can help keep track of the equipment being used across the premises. This is especially useful when items move between rooms, get replaced, or are brought out only when needed.
I have written more about this in Why Small Businesses Should Keep an Appliance List.
